Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Preview - New Villain Reveal

Sony and Naughty Dog were on hand at last week's Game Developers Conference to show off a bit of new content in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. And when we say "a bit," we really mean it. The press got to see a quick cutscene revealing the game's primary villain, and then it was on to the same burning chateau demo we saw back when the game was introduced in December. Fortunately, Sony did bring along some 3D glasses so we could see how the gameplay looked with the Z-axis all poking out and whatnot. So how's it all coming along? Well, this will come as a surprise to approximately zero people, but Uncharted 3 looks great no matter how many dimensions you're experiencing.

Let's start with this new bad guy…or rather bad lady in this case. Her name's Catherine Marlowe, and according to developer Naughty Dog, she's quite the evil mastermind. Marlowe is the head of a highly powerful cabal (read: shadowy organization) that began during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. We're not entirely sure what sort of conspiracies this cabal gets up to, but we were told that they operate with a brutal task force of former special forces agents to get whatever it is they need done. Now Marlowe is after the ring that Nathan Drake carries around his neck (the yin to his half-tucked shirt's yang) because of its connection to Sir Francis Drake. Obviously, Nate would very much like to hold onto it.

Marlowe was shown being all snide and villainous in a cutscene plucked right from the game's storyline. Sully and Drake are violently knocked from a doorway into a dimly lit urban alley, likely somewhere in London judging from the well-armed guards with English accents standing by to keep our pair of heroes from doing anything stupid. To drive home the point, these guards give Drake and Sully a pretty good beatdown despite the fact that the two are dressed in surprisingly snappy formalwear. Soon enough, Marlowe shows up and has a less-than-pleasant conversation with Drake. If we had to describe her look and sound, it would be Dame Judi Dench's fun-hating evil twin. With Helen Mirren's hair. And a giant umbrella knife. Listen, we're getting sidetracked--this lady is nasty. That's the important thing.

After this brief look at the game's new villain, Sony and Naughty Dog passed out the shutter glasses to show how Uncharted 3 looks in 3D. We were situated too far away from the TV to see if there was a noticeable impact on the game's resolution with 3D enabled--an issue with recent games like Killzone 3. However, we did notice that the game's 3D effects add a pretty substantial sense of scale to the climbing and platforming sequences. In this burning chateau demo, Drake and Sully are trying to flee a burning mansion as crackling walls and support beams are toppling down around them. During those moments when Drake has to balance across a narrow beam above a massive pit of fire, or shimmy his way along a narrow ledge, the 3D effect makes the drop below seem that much more ominous. The effect is substantially more subtle during combat sequences, where nothing really popped out at us. But when you're staring down a potentially deadly ledge, the effect is much more pronounced.

Sony's GDC demo of Uncharted 3 was an impressive showing, though we'd be lying if we said we weren't hoping for more substantially new content out of the event. Still, we've got plenty of time to go until the game's November release, so we'll just bide our time knowing that Naughty Dog--with all those Game of the Year trophies on the shelves--probably knows what it's doing.

When Medal of Honor was released last October, EA was a little worried by its less-than-stellar reviews. (The critical scores were actually blamed for the megapublisher's stock price slipping.) However, four months later, the game has shipped more than 5 million units, making it a bona fide hit.

So it should come as little surprise, then, that a second Medal of Honor is in the works. The sequel is being once again developed by Danger Close Games, the sub-studio of Electronic Arts' Los Angeles campus. In a post on the official Medal of Honor website, executive producer Greg Goodrich announced the sequel, which had been hinted at by a job listing last month.

And that's about all that is known about the game, which is a follow-up to a title that touted its realism over the over-the-top atmosphere of recent Call of Duty games. The older title, which rebooted the formerly World War II-set franchise, was set during the early days of the still-ongoing Afghan War, giving a possible clue to the sequel's location. The game followed Tier 1 Operators, the elite commando group that was at the forefront of the US invasion of Afghanistan. Many of the levels were based on real-life battles or enemy engagements, and the game was made with the input of real-life ex-Tier 1 Operators and the US Army.

Electronic Arts brings a $4.99 digital version of Hasbro's classic board game to the iPad, and it does a remarkable job of recreating the look and feel of the game. Using a finger, you drag titles to the gameboard (the number of points that your word is worth is displayed as you place letters), and hit "Play" to end the turn. Tapping "Shuffle" rearranges your title to help spark word-formation ideas. "Swap" lets you tap up to 7 letters and replace them with tiles that will (hopefully) improve your chances of busting out a huge score, but you lose a turn in the process. The Party Play mode lets you nerd it up with four friends, transforming the iPad into the gameboard and any available iPhones into tile racks.

Dungeon Hunter HD

Dungeon Hunter for the iPhone was dubbed a Diablo clone, but the $6.99 iPad version ups the ante and gives the game its own feel. In this version, you create your own character with which to go adventuring in the world of Gothicus. Warrior, rogue, and mage classes serve as your in-game avatar. The isometric view and spacious screen show plenty of colorful character detail and animations, and you can (thankfully!) customize the location of the virtual controls if they don't your style.

Gameloft's $9.99 NOVA (Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance) bears more than a passing resemblance to Bungie's hit Xbox 360 first-person shooter with its space marine vs. alien invader storyline, and very similar combat armor that comes a little too close to Halo territory. But being a clone doesn't mean that the game's second-rate; it utilizes the iPad's large screen to include a responsive virtual joystick on the lower-left side of the screen. A trio of buttons in the lower-right that allow you to jump, shoot a short range energy blast, and fire one of six weapons (assault rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, handgun, rocket launcher, and plasma gun-plus grenades and machine gun turrets in certain levels). The single-player campaign is spread across 13 environments, and multiplayer features 2 to 4 players local and online death-matches

In Rogue Warrior, lead character Dick "Demo Dick" Marcinko (based on the real-life ex-Navy SEAL, and voiced by actor Mickey Rourke) doesn't just drop an F-bomb--he drops an entire nuclear warhead of repulsive language that would make even the most world-wise among us reach for a set of earplugs. As depicted in developer Rebellion's newest first-person shooter, Marcinko is a shallow, potty-mouthed antihero without a single redeeming quality. Unfortunately, the appalling dialogue seems to have inspired Rogue Warrior's gameplay, which is characterized by useless stealth mechanics, inconsistent hit detection, incredibly linear level design, and abysmal AI. Yet the boring, one-dimensional gameplay and terrible dialogue aren't the game's most insulting blemishes; that prize belongs to Rogue Warrior's total lack of value. You can finish it in just over two hours, and the stripped multiplayer consists only of deathmatch and team deathmatch, yet publisher Bethesda Softworks is asking full price. Don't be a sucker: Steer clear of this garbage.

You'll at least sniff one sweet smell amid the stench--that of Rogue Warrior's momentarily satisfying close-quarters kills. If you get close enough to your enemy (not exactly difficult considering the putrid AI), you can plunge your knife into his back, snap his neck, or smash his head into the wall. The thrill dissipates quickly, however. Every level is linear, and opportunities to sneak up behind your Communist foes are laid out in a predictable manner. There may be three or four enemies milling about at a time, all placed in such a way as to make it a cinch to sneak up behind them and play grim reaper. These easy stealth opportunities are further simplified by the morons you assassinate, who appear to have no peripheral vision and won't notice you creeping up on them from the most obvious angles. They also appear to be near-deaf; they won't react to the cries of their nearby comrades as you dump them over a railing, and they won't notice the sound of your footsteps, even if you're sprinting at full speed.

Perhaps the shallow stealth mechanics would be easier to stomach if the shooting were fun, but Rogue Warrior is easy, boring, and predictable. Every firefight occurs in much the same way: You wander down a corridor, encounter three or four enemies, and shoot them. Sometimes your foes barge through a door, drive up in a truck and jump out, or break through a skylight and slide down grapple lines, but this always happens right in front of you, and opponents are generally happy to remain in your line of fire. With few exceptions, AI enemies won't attempt to flank you, won't react to getting shot once they are behind cover, and won't run from the grenades you toss--and they'll throw their own grenades at each other and shoot the exploding barrels that stand right next to their teammates. In your adversaries' defense, however, the levels don't give them many opportunities to flank. While there are some medium-sized warehouses and other somewhat open environments, the path to your next objective is always a straight line. There are no alternate routes and no hidden rooms to explore, and the only door that will open is the one you are meant to charge through. Rogue Warrior only has one direction (forward), one speed (slow), and one intelligence level (stupid).

Rogue Warrior tries to mix things up with a few other elements, such as lights you can shoot out to darken rooms, night-vision goggles, and a basic cover system, but these elements seem out of place and make the game feel like a poor man's Rainbow Six. Once Dick is behind cover, you view him from a third-person perspective; you can peek above or to the sides to shoot targets or even fire blindly if you so desire. But while the cover system works well enough, it's ultimately unnecessary in light of the game's slow, straightforward pace. And enemies are too easy to kill to make shooting out a light or using night vision worthwhile. Yet Rogue Warrior doesn't even get the straight-up action right. The hit detection is all but broken. You might kill a Russian soldier with a few shots to the knee, but others may survive what seem to be six or seven obvious headshots. Bad animations further diminish the quality of the gunplay, because there's little sense of impact when your bullets hit their mark. Your Communist foes sometimes stagger and then regain their composure when under fire, but sometimes you can unleash a barrage on them without getting any kind of physical reaction.

While your Korean and Russian rivals don't seem particularly troubled by being filled with lead, Dick himself is never afraid to express his dissatisfaction. The mix-and-match obscenities he spouts while under fire would almost be funny if they weren't so obviously meant to be taken seriously. Sadly, you hear a lot more about Dick's genitalia and aversion to Commies than you do about the story, which occurs during the height of the Cold War and follows North Korea's sale of nukes to the USSR. You'll fight in hedge mazes during a heavy snowfall, in a hydroelectric dam, and at a shipping dockyard, and some nice lighting gives some of these locales a touch of atmosphere. Otherwise, plain textures, jittery animations, and heavy aliasing make Rogue Warrior look bland and dated.

So what's there to do once your two hours are up and the credits roll? Well, you could check out Rogue Warrior's stripped suite of multiplayer options, which let up to eight players shoot each other up in deathmatch or team deathmatch. But that's it. There are no other modes, no persistent rewards (unless you count the all-but-empty online leaderboards), no classes, no customizable loadouts--and no fun. There's nothing to draw you back in, making Rogue Warrior a waste of time and money. If for any reason you still feel compelled to check it out, consider this: Dick's atrocious lines were mixed into a rap that plays during the end credits. It's a summary of everything that makes Rogue Warrior so excruciating to play, condensed into a three-minute song.

At the easiest level, standard FPS information is given to the player about weapons, ammo, squad health, compass direction along with cross hairs via a HUD. Additionally the location of enemies who have been spotted by the player's squad is indicated at the lowest level. Higher levels of difficulty remove this information until none is left on screen. Ammunition counts must be remembered as well as the health of the squad. Locations of enemies must be determined by listening to AI squad mates and using other visual cues like the direction they are firing. At high difficulties visual effects become more important, particularly at long range where smoke or dust can help to identify areas which are dangerous. At any difficulty level the player may be killed by a single shot, though according to designers, it is not always the case.

Postal III is a third-person shooter video game developed by Running With Scissors. It is the third game in the Postal video game franchise and is scheduled for release in North America in 2009 for Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 port was announced in later stages of development, which will probably be released shortly after the initial release. The game was developed under the working title Postal 3: Catharsis until October 18, 2006, when the finalized title was revealed to be Postal III.
Postal III will continue and expand upon the sandbox-style design of its predecessor, Postal 2, as well as include motion captured performances by a wide array of celebrities, including film stars and Playboy Playmates. It has also been stated that Uwe Boll, director of the Postal film, will appear in the game.
In Postal III, The Postal Dude emigrates to Paradise's sister town of Catharsis. (he blew up Paradise with a nuclear bomb)[8] Unlike its predecessor, the game will not be based on the Unreal engine but rather on the Source engine. Also, Postal III will be a third-person shooter, rather than its predecessors Postal 2 which is a first-person shooter and Postal which is isometric.
Early gameplay footage of the game being played at E3 2008 reveals new weapons such as "The Badgersaw", a nail bat, an M60 machine gun and the return of the gas can and matches from Postal 2. A new concept of weapon is a test lab monkey which will react to a laser pointed by the Postal Dude. Product manager Mike Jaret revealed in an interview that there will be "special vehicles" in the game such as segways.

EA Sports MMA: Randy Couture and Peter Moore Speak

I'm not sure what's less surprising: The fact that Brett Favre came out of his fake retirement to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, or the fact that EA Sports signed mixed martial-arts legend Randy Couture as a featured athlete in its upcoming debut, EA Sports MMA. Fight fans had been speculating for a while about the five-time UFC champions eventual appearance in EA Sports game, if for no other reason than the unique circumstances that surround the announcement: Couture still has two fights remaining on a UFC contract (including his next fight against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight at UFC 102 on August 29), making him perhaps the only UFC fighter who will appear in EA Sports MMA, barring some future talent shake-ups.

Last Saturday, I went down to San Jose for a press conference in which EA Sports president Peter Moore announced Couture's involvement in the game. The event was held just before a Strikeforce promotion at the HP Pavilion. The show was sponsored in part by EA Sports, as were a couple of the fighters on the card. Just ahead of the show, I got a chance to sit down with both Randy Couture and Peter Moore to talk about EA Sports MMA. I started with Couture, whose entry into the fight game actually came as a result, of all things, from a real-time strategy game.

Q&A WITH RANDY COUTURE

GameSpot: So how did the deal with EA Sports MMA come together? I understand it started with Command & Conquer, right? [Note: Couture played Commander Warren Fuller in 2008's Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3].

Randy Couture: Yeah, with my sports agent, Matt Walker. [EA] approached him about me playing a character in Command & Conquer--me and [female MMA fighter Gina Carano, who played sniper Natasha Volkova in the game], and that led to talks. We'd been discussing video game options. We had just spoke to some other companies, and Command & Conquer opened the door with EA, and if there was any interest with them in doing an MMA game and being a part of it, and that's--the ball just rolled.

GS: What was the C&C experience like? What did you do? How long did it take?

RC: It was a one-day shoot. Played the character, you know, you do the theatrical clips in between the game play now, and I played one of the characters, Commander Walker. It was cool. It was fun. You know, got costumed and the whole thing…

GS: You memorized your lines and all that?

RC: Yeah, to some extent.

GS: Cool. Can you tell me about what your involvement with EA Sports MMA has been so far and what it will be in the future?

RC: Well, I think initially just discussing layout for the game. I don't know anything about code or any of that stuff, so my contribution would be miniscule in that. But I obviously know the sport, and I think as an athlete in the sport I've always kind of focused on game-planning, studying video, training, sharpening particular tools, and the progression. As you go from fight to fight you get better in certain areas. I think those are all things that [the developers] liked and wanted to try to incorporate as more of a cerebral approach to mixed martial arts.

It's not just two guys out there brawling and beating each other up, but I think that's something that they… want to capture in the game. Obviously they're very, very good at what they do, so I'm excited to see how that comes out. You're going to actually get to travel around and go to different regions of the world to focus on specific pieces of the MMA puzzle and all those sorts of things. So, I think it's going to be very interesting.

GS: And you mentioned you'll be doing motion capture in October, correct?

RC: I think we're doing some motion capture stuff in October for the game specifically.

GS: Have they given you any sort of plans of what they're looking for from you?

RC: I've had no guidelines to that. Yeah, we're just setting up dates to do some of that now.

GS: I'm wondering if you have seen UFC 2009 Undisputed and, if so, what you thought of it?

RC: I haven't seen it. I've seen commercials for it and some of the broadcasts of the fights that I've been at. So, I've seen kind of dynamically, you know, what it looks like with CGI and all that stuff, and it looks pretty good. But, you know, I'm not a huge gamer. I don't know--probably showing my age there--but Atari came out when I was a kid, and we were pretty excited about Pong. So, you know, this whole age is completely different.

GS: During the press conference [EA Sports president Peter Moore] said he thinks video games are a great way of growing a sports popularity. Do you have any expectations in that regard for EA Sports MMA and what it will do for the sport?

RC: Well, I think it's a very intriguing thing, you could have kids in a lot of countries who maybe have never even seen it on TV, but they're really interested in a fighting game or a combative game, and the fact that they can interact with people in other countries like the US, where it's obviously hugely popular, is only going to create interest. And then they're going to want to go out and actually see the sport that they're playing on the video game, where otherwise they may not have gotten exposed to it.

GS: The question was asked of Peter Moore in the press conference, but do you have thoughts on Dana White strong-arming UFC talent into not appearing in this game?

RC: It's not really for me to comment. Dana's running a business and doing the things that he thinks he needs to do to run that business. And I'm a fighter. I'm going to fight. They're going to set me up with fights, and you know, I've fought hard to keep some of my ancillary rights and some of that interest for myself, which is what allowed me to be in a position to do this game in the first place.

GS: Obviously, signing you is a big deal for EA Sports, as was signing Fedor Emelianenko a few weeks back. How familiar you are you with Fedor? Have you met him?

RC: Oh, I've had dinner with him. I've met him on several occasions. I was actually hopeful that he was going to sign with the UFC and I'd get a chance to fight him. But that didn't happen that way, and I wasn't terribly surprised. I know there's a lot of stumbling blocks in those negotiations, so you know it is what it is. He's a very nice guy, very interesting guy, and obviously a very technical fighter.

GS: But you'll see him in the game.

RC: Yeah. It'll be--I hope I'll be able to fight him in the game.

GS: Do you have any expectations for the ratings that you'll have in your game, your specific fighter ratings?

RC: I have no idea. I don't know how any of that stuff works.

GS: Well you're obviously one of the stars, so I'm sure you'll have some say over how you're portrayed.

RC: Yeah, well, I'm sure, again, they'll be a pretty true to the game and—the sport, I should say, and it'll come out the way it comes out.

GS: How do you feel this sport has changed over the, say, the past five years?

RC: Well, I think it's garnered a lot more acceptance. People understand [the sport] a lot better now. We were step-children in a lot of ways. Most people looked at us like we were dangerous or somehow criminal because we got in a cage and fought. And I think people understand the training. They understand the dedication, the tactics, the technique and all of the things that go into being a fighter in mixed martial arts, and so it's created a whole new landscape for us.

GS: Thanks for your time, Randy.

Q&A WITH PETER MOORE

Peter Moore: Sure.

GS: Fignt Night Round 4 hasn't sold as well as a lot of people have thought it might and I'm wondering what you attribute that to. Do you think it was the wrong time for Fight Night 4 because of the continuing rise of mixed martial arts?

PM: Well, I think there's a couple of things. First of all, one of the great things about Fight Night for us is [that] it's a game that sells for a long time. It's not like our regular [sports series] because there's no true season. So, we'll still be selling Fight Night Round 4 till the day, if we ship Fight Night Round 5. In fact, Fight Night Round 3 was still selling very well on what we call 'catalogue titles'. So, it's not the one where it needs to explode like Madden or NBA [Live] or NHL out of the gates and then come back down again. I think there's probably an argument to be made as well that now [that] the UFC game shipped--probably a lot of people in the early going probably [enjoyed] that, and more credit to them. But eventually, they'll move on. And so the great thing about shipping early in the year is we'll see solid sales of Round 4 all the way through. We'll get a spike for holiday, and it'll keep selling. As I say, the only thing that stopped Round 3 selling is we shipped Round 4.

GS: Right.

PM: And the other little thing is we don't have a year on it. So, it has this kind of perennial sense on the shelf for retailers. All we could do is put the right marketing behind it. I thought we did some very cool marketing with [Muhammad] Ali and [Mike] Tyson. And then secondly, put [out a game well-received by Metacritic], which at what?--88, 89--we're at.

GS: It was well-reviewed. [Note: The PS3 version of FN 4 is currently rated at 88 on Metacritic; the Xbox 360 version is rated at 87.]

PM: Yeah, very well-reviewed. And if you played it, it's a blast. So, within our control that's what we're doing. It will continue to sell for the next two years. We're not in the least bit worried.

GS: You mentioned in there that you're looking to do a fight game every year, so you've committed to a Fight Night game in 2011?

PM: We have not announced anything, but you know…

GS: Okay. But that's the schedule you talked about in the press conference.

PM: Yeah. I haven't announced Madden 11 yet either, but you know.

GS: Oh, really? There's some news.

PM: [laughs] Maybe that'll happen.

GS: All right. Let's talk about MMA for a bit. EA Sports finds itself in a strange situation in that you aren't the major license holder this time around. How does the approach change when you aren't the one with the license?

PM: I mean, licenses are fun, but you know licenses aren't the be-all and end-all. I don't know if you've ever played FIFA, but you know it's a good example. We had some great licenses with FIFA, but back in 2003-04-05 and 06, Pro Evo Soccer, which had what I'll call "inferior licenses," was a better game. We've admitted to that--it was a better game, and they were outselling us. So, whilst licenses are a very important part of what attracts a consumer to reach and look, they're not the be-all and end-all. Metacritic becomes more and more important--word of mouth, what is the game, and then you do your demo. And then, as you see, you get the quality of the game right and differentiate, then we've got a chance.

Our goal [with EA Sports MMA] is to help grow the sport [of mixed martial arts], and you know better than most probably in that room, how a world-class video game helps actually grow the sport. We look at the research we've done on Madden--and the NFL will attest to this--is that Madden over the last 21 years has helped fan involvement and make young people fans of the NFL. They'll say, "My first taste of the NFL was playing Madden."

We've been around long enough now so you've got coaches in the NFL that were playing when they were kids. So, you've got this kind of cultural thing that's bigger than the video game that actually introduced. My son played high school football. And I'm from Liverpool, but I've never played a down of football in my life--not that type of football. But you know he'll say, "I could recognize a cover two defense because I saw that in Madden '96 on the PlayStation," or something.

So, our goal is absolutely, yes, we'll get the right fighters and we recognize the power of UFC and [are] not, under any circumstances, blind to the challenge we have. But I believe getting the right fighters, getting geographic diversity, which I've said several times as well, making a great game, and then putting the authenticity that EA Sports always does into the game itself gives us a, no pun intended, fighting chance to compete with a game that maybe has a different license.

GS: Considering the critical and retail success of UFC, coupled with the MMA's skyrocketing popularity, do these factors change your expectations of this EA Sports MMA from a sales or critical standpoint?

PM: Well there's no forecast of sales against this yet. We're still a fiscal year away, obviously next year. But I think we see, I think we feel validated, if you will, that this is a sport that EA Sports needs to get involved in. The strategy of having a fighting game with the power of Fight Night and then having MMA on alternate years gives us a nice rhythm to what we do. And we're not, as I said in the press conference, under any illusion that we'd want to be able to churn out an MMA game every year. We don't think that that's the right thing to do. We need to be able to invest in building differentiation and quality. But the strategy for us in the broad fighting genre is Fight Night and MMA alternating years.

GS: Am I reading in too much of the fact that EA Sports is here with Strikeforce tonight in San Jose to think that a Strikeforce licensing deal might happen?

PM: Yeah, I think you are. I mean, we're big fans of what [Strikeforce promotion founder] Scott Coker has done. I think he's obviously, at this point, turned into a very legitimate contender, if you will, to UFC. At the same time, we're also working with other circuits around the world, importantly, and to bring different styles and even different ring types… into play. So, yes, you're probably reading too much [into it].

GS: A few weeks back you announced the addition of Fedor Emelianenko to the roster, and today you've announced Randy Couture. Can you talk about these two fighters and how important a roster is to you?

PM: We call it a "Fight Night approach", actually, which is a little different than we typically do this. You know, our other games are organizational-based: NFL, MBA, NHL, FIFA. And in this particular instance, [with] Fight Night, the recipe we had was to develop our own IP, if you will, which is the title, and then actually find the right individuals to contribute on a one-on-one basis. And so we certainly have found great success in doing that with Fight Night, and we intend to do the same thing with MMA--find the right fighters and maybe work with some surrogates and have them, you know, as modes in the game or something. But this is EA Sports, MMA. It's not Strikeforce. It's not Dream. It's not... Pride or anything else that might be either alive or dead right now... So, it's something that we intend to build. That gives us a lot more flexibility in what we can do with the game, quite frankly, as well.

GS: Signing Fedor was obviously a huge win. From an outsider's point of view it seemed that the deal was down to the wire in that there were rumors that he might sign with UFC. Can you talk about how that process went from your point of view?

PM: Well, I can't get into the details, but obviously we're huge fans of Fedor. Between him and Randy, those were the two that you would go after and go after hard as, if you will, "tent poles" for the title. And regardless of whatever negotiations he was having or where he was going to fight, we were very clear that we wanted Fedor in the game, and our team went and did that deal, and that's turned out very, very well for us.

Now I think we're getting all of the underpinnings in place when you have two world-class fighters like Randy and Fedor, you have the opportunity to build your title around that and there'll be more to come. There's a lot of fighters out there that have image rights that allow them to do video game rights separately than where they may fight, and so our ability to get after them and start building out our roster. You've got two very, very strong fighters who are world recognized in Fedor and Randy, and it's a great start for us.

GS: I know you've addressed this question several times today, but I'm wondering if you see EA going after UFC talent in the future?

PM: We go after talent, period, and so we seek great fighters that can actually sign a deal, and that's very important. We are, under no circumstances, a company that goes and tries to encourage people to break deals that they have. If they've got a deal where their image rights [are] locked up with UFC, then that's the case. If there's a deal where we can legitimately and legally sign them, then you bet we'll be talking to them. But [UFC president Dana White], a smart guy, has got a lot of his fighters with their image rights signed up, and we, of course, wouldn't get involved in that.

GS: All right. Final question, and this one's about wrestling. With Midway's financial troubles the TNA wrestling license is presumably out there for the taking. I know EA has done wrestling games in the past with the WCW (like WCW Mayhem). Any chance of getting into a wrestling game again?

PM: You know, in today's economy, you really have to make some tradeoffs as regards where you deploy your resources. We've got a strategy now that, as I said, feels like Fight Night--MMA--Fight Night--MMA on alternating years. For us to get involved in a third combat sport might be challenging for us. And while we have a lot of wrestling fans, believe me, they're within the EA Sports ranks, there is no plan right now to get involved in wrestling.

We really need to be focused on creating two world-class games, every single year having one of those shipped. And a third game might be a little bit of a stretch from where we have talent. You don't want to dilute the quality of what you're doing to try and get breadth. And I think our real focus right now is the sport of boxing, the sweet science of boxing, and the hugely attractive and growing sport of mixed martial arts.

GS: All right. Thank you, Peter.

Champions with the "flag-bearer" condition have iron will, planar bound, and cannot use/be part of any abilities that would move it more than one space at a time. If a champion carrying the flag is killed, the flag is dropped on the space that the champion died. At the beginning of a turn, if a unit you control is standing on your flag while it is at its starting flag point, that unit will take 20 damage. If a unit you control walks onto your flag while it is anywhere else, the flag will be returned to the starting flag point. If a player has BOTH his and his opponent's flag inside of his shrine's deployment zone, the flag is considered captured, and a point is scored. The game ends after a player has scored 3 points. You may only use Champions in this game type.

King of the Hill: The object of this game is to score points by having only Champions you control inside of a special "zone". The zone is located in the center of the map, and indicated with black squares. At the start of a turn, if the zone has only champions controlled by one player inside of it, that player scores a point. If the zone has no champions inside of it, or if both players have champions inside of it, no player scores a point. The game ends after a player has scored 10 points. You may only use Champions in this game type.

Normal: The object of this game is to destroy your opponent's shrine by reducing its HP to 0. This game type uses standard rules (which can be found on the website). All rune types may be used.

Campaigns

Take your favorite Runes on an adventure! Campaigns are a series of Encounters, where you will face off with a computer-controlled opponent. In the Single Player lobby, you will find several free Campaigns that are ready for you to play! In Campaigns, your Runes can gain experience. Win an Encounter and you might just get a Rune Fragment, which can be used in the Player Rewards section!

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010

The competition between football games looks set to be fiercer than ever this year. EA Sports showed its hand early, demoing FIFA 10 all the way back in April when it was only 45 percent complete. Konami responded with a teaser trailer for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, which showed an extraordinarily realistic-looking Lionel Messi tearing up the pitch. Today, Konami offered us the first chance to play its game in central London so that we could assess the gameplay, features, and players firsthand.

The first trailer for Pro Evo 2010 emphasised player likenesses, and from what we saw of the preview build, the in-game models deserve as much praise. Players from Liverpool and Barcelona--the only two teams included in this demo--looked incredibly realistic, with Steven Gerrard and Lionel Messi in particular looking just like their real-life counterparts. The most impressive aspects of the character models were the fine details, such as arm hair, the rippling material effects on their shirts, and their overall likeness to the real players.

The build we played was running on the PC, which is apparently the format that the game is developed on, and we used the Xbox 360 pads to play the game. Konami has said that it's not introducing 360-degree control this year, addressing the major upgrade to FIFA 10, but it is something that's being considered for Pro Evo in the future. Fans of the series will be pleased to hear that even at this early stage, the game plays very well, although it was sadly too early to pick up some of the finer tweaks that have been made to this year's game.

The big upgrade for this year's game is the tactics system, which includes two new features. The team-style feature allows you to tweak defensive and offensive team strategies using sliding scales. Both attacking and defending have their own tweaks on a 100-point scale. For example, you can set player support higher if you want your teammates to move ahead of the ball carrier to receive a pass, or you can set it lower if you want them to stay behind for a more defensive game. Konami has done a great job of creating visual feedback for these changes in the menu, so you can see their effect immediately onscreen.

In addition to team styles, there's a new card system that takes advantage of specific player strengths. Each player has access to five cards that can focus player attributes, and these can be useful in specific situations. For example, you can turn off Gerrard's natural tendency to track back, or you can switch on his ability to shoot from anywhere as and when it suits. It's another thing to think about when you're playing the game at a high level, but it looks set to add a new level of strategy to the game.

While the preview build that we saw was limited in terms of teams and modes, we did manage to take a sneaky look around the menu system to find out what's in store. Champions League mode looks like it will make a return from last year, as will Become a Legend mode, where you take control of a single player through his career. The visual presentation is slightly different from last year, with football tickets and magazines used to present some of the game options, but the music is still generic, covering genres described as "new wave" and "tech funk."
It's still early days for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, but the first hands-on was certainly encouraging. We're looking forward to seeing more of the game at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, so check back next month for even more Pro Evo-related news.

Metin2 arena (NEW WORLD)

Metin2 will be holding its arena tournament for the New World on May 30th, May 31st and June 6th.
The sign up date for this event will be on Friday May 22nd starting at 4pm EST until all spots are filled. Click the green cards to pick your spot to sign up.
There are in total only 16 spots for each level bracket. When signing up you must be logged out of the game. Once you have signed up you cannot log into the game for 15 min. Players must have the gold on the character when they sign up for a spot. Opponents will be randomly chosen on the day of sign up and will be revealed 10 min before the start of the tournament. Players can only have one entry per account in either the low level or high level category.
All entry fees are non refundable so make sure you are available the day of the match.
First rounds will take place on the 30th and 31st of May at 10 am EST. Final rounds will be held on Saturday June the 6th 10 am EST. Players must notify us 24 hours in advance if they will not be able to participate. Failure to appear to the match or arriving more that 10 min from the match time will result in an automatic loss. The opponent in this case will automatically advance to the next round.

Next GTA in development for over a year

Likely to be completed some time in 2010, but not necessarily before October 31, 2010.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has said Take-Two management has confirmed to him that the next instalment of Grand Theft Auto is in development, and has been for over a year.

The new game is said to utilise the same game "engines" as the most recent GTA, and Rockstar North is believed to be highly motivated to complete the game, understanding that a big pay day will follow.

Pachter's comments follow news overnight that Take-Two will not release a new multi-platform Grand Theft Auto title in fiscal 2010.

"When we do the simple math, we conclude that the next instalment is likely to be completed by some time in 2010, although given the frequency of game delays, it is not clear that it will necessarily come before October 31, 2010," said Pachter in a research note put out today.

He added: "However, it is clear to us that the next version of GTA will arrive before the end of FY:11."

Pachter estimates the game will achieve sales of between 15 and 18 million units.

While Left 4 Dead 2 was one of the biggest hits at this year's E3, the post-event backlash has almost threatened to overshadow the game itself. Despite the hostility from its usually loyal fan base, developer Valve decided to let us play even more of the game upon its visit to London yesterday. We wasted no time putting our questions to Valve's Doug Lombardi, as well as taking more than a few runs through the New Orleans level on both the Xbox 360 and PC.

First of all, it's worth noting just how similar Left 4 Dead 2 is to the original game in terms of gameplay. While there are plenty of subtle changes that fans will notice, the meat of the game is exactly the same as before. You play in a team of four through various movie-inspired levels, taking on the zombie horde that stand between you and your extraction. The concept is simple: If you stick together, it's easier to stay alive, but if you play as a lone gunman, you'll die faster while sabotaging your team.

The level we played was called The Parish and followed on from the same mission that we saw at E3 exactly one month ago. Like the original Left 4 Dead, each level is presented with a movie poster, and this level's tagline was "This time it all goes South." It's a reference to the level's location in New Orleans, where you fight it out in a suburban setting before crossing a bridge to make it to an escape helicopter.

So what's actually been changed for this sequel? Well, the most obvious new addition was the melee combat, with frying pans and axes available in the demo we played. They were only effective within close proximity to the enemy, but, boy, are they effective when you are. The axe is capable of lopping off limbs (dismemberment is another new feature of the game), while the pan makes a highly satisfying thud on impact. The most interesting melee weapon has yet to be shown--the chainsaw is an amazing prospect, so Valve is making us wait until later in the year before we get our hands on it.

Luckily, we were able to sink our teeth into plenty of other new features. There are now weapon upgrades available at random points in the game--we came across an incendiary upgrade that made our machine gun bullets set fire on impact. You only get about 50 of these fire-spewing shots per upgrade, but they certainly make short work of the standard zombies. Then there's the brutal new enemy called the Charger, who picks you up and slams you to the ground repeatedly until your teammates come to rescue you.

The game was at its most tense during the gauntlet run--a term Valve used to explain the bridge section at the end of the level we played. Basically, a never-ending mass of zombies stand between you and the escape helicopter, so you have to work with your teammates to fend off the horde while slowly making your way across the bridge. Despite a liberal amount of gun turrets and ammo stockpiles, it's incredibly difficult to make it across, and if one of your team members die, there's no way to bring him back into the game. No wonder we died a few times trying to make it across here, but we loved the difference this made to the end of the level, as well as the tension it created.

Valve was cagey about the difficulty level that was set up for our demonstration; but whatever Valve selected, it was damn hard. On our first run-through, we barely made it to the first safe house. On our second run-through, we made it about halfway across the bridge. On our final attempt, this time on the PC rather than Xbox 360, only one of our teammates made it to the helicopter--the rest of us died trying to get there. As hardened Left 4 Dead players, we found it a little bit frustrating, but it was no less addictive for the jump in difficulty.

Left 4 Dead 2 is shaping up really well, and with four new characters, the group dynamic has changed once again. We played as Coach, a huge dude with an attitude; and Rochelle, a smaller female character. There was also the white-suited Nick and the jocklike Ellis. We loved our time with the game, especially playing with other journalists in the LAN setting. While Left 4 Dead 2 certainly doesn't do anything drastically different, we're confident that it will offer another highly addictive experience of the zombie apocalypse. The full game is out on the PC and Xbox 360 in November, and we should be able to bring you more between now and its release.

Third Mortal Kombat movie filming in September - Report

Last month, a bankruptcy court lawsuit provided Mortal Kombat movie fans with a glimmer of hope that the fighting franchise could hit theaters for the third time. The complaint, brought by original Mortal Kombat film producer Larry Kasanoff, mentioned that a third feature was in the works, with a script, talent, and shooting locations all lined up.

That film may be closer than the next installment in the gory gaming series, judging by a San Gabriel Valley Tribune feature on the martial artist and actor underneath the Scorpion mask. Eighth degree black belt Chris Casamassa told the paper that he will be reprising his role for a third Mortal Kombat movie, with filming set to begin in September.

The original Mortal Kombat film was made with a $25 million budget in 1995, and went on to garner $122 million in box office receipts worldwide. The success of the movie prompted Kasanoff's production company to create a number of follow-up projects in quick succession. There was a feature-film sequel, 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, the Saturday-morning cartoon Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, the TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest, and even a touring stage show.

n the aftermath of the Lord of the Rings movies, the fantasy genre has been given a second life. Weaving adventure threads into a pseudo-medieval tapestry is a staple of the elfnorc world, and MU gives it to you on a no-frills platter.

You start off as a Dark Wizard, a Dark Knight or a Fairy Elf, with accordant strengths and weaknesses. You can save different base characters, a fun feature that allows you to begin play as a wizard, and later, restart and switch to a knight--but not both at the same time. The look of your character changes to reflect any new accoutrements you get, including wings and spells. There's also a coordinate system on display, so it's easier to move around the elaborate MU world.

Items can be combined in many different ways, but more game experience gets you better gear. You can even fight other players, but be warned: if you kill too many innocents, you'll be branded a murderer.

Frustratingly, MU has the same poorly-documented installation process that plagues most MMORPGs. Worse, the game's servers were hesitant and sluggish when we played, interfering with the flow of play. Once, it even got us killed!

MU is lacking in too many areas to make it worth the download to all but the most die-hard fans of the genre, considering that there are better free fantasy games out there.

Conquer is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, developed by TQ Digital Entertainment. The game is available in English, Chinese, French, Japanese,Spanish and Arabic. The game landscape is a two dimensional rendition of mythical China with three dimensional characters. The game has a straightforward combat-focused play style, incorporating common elements of many MMORPGs such as wealth, fame and character development. Downloading and playing Conquer Online is free, with funds provided by the sale of 'tq points', which can be redeemed in the game and used as a form of currency. The operators also sell installation CDs for those who cannot download the game, or would like to own a hard copy.

Upgrading Equipment

While armors color can be changed, there is normally only one type of armor that can be worn for each class and level. After first or second rebirth, level 70 characters can also use any equipment that is level 70 or below, regardless of character-class requirements.

Equipment has a range of quality levels - from lowest to highest, they are Normal, Refined, Unique, Elite, and Super. Equipment may be upgraded using either DragonBalls to increase the item's quality, or Meteors to increase the item's required level [which also makes the item stronger]. When upgrading an item via the DragonBall method, it becomes harder to accomplish the further up in the scale the item is.

'Fixed' items have the most powerful properties of any type of item[10] but are limited to level 52 or lower, and cannot be upgraded in any way. These items cannot be created; they are only found when dropped by aide or messenger type monsters.

An item may also be composed, adding "+#" to the item's name, where # is a number between 1 and 12, inclusive. [11] This number, similar to the quality levels, gives the item extra stats, making it more powerful.[12]

Gems can be mined or dropped by slain monsters, and are used to add an effect to an item such as increased damage, weapon proficiency, or overall experience gain[13]. Gems are also needed for players to be reborn. To insert a gem into an item, it must have a socket; there are a maximum of two sockets per piece of equipment. Additionally, items can be blessed or enchanted, which decreases damage received or increases a player's health. There are 10 gems: Dragon, Moon, Violet, Kylin, Fury, Tortoise, Phoenix, Rainbow, Glory, and Thunder. (Glory which can be socketed into the star tower, thunder which can be socketed into heaven fan)[13]

An item may also be blessed with the help of Super Tortoise Gems, in order to award the character by subtracting battle damage when in combat. A single blessed item may relieve up to 7 percent of damage taken.

Gems are required for enchantment.[14] The amount of health is randomly selected - the higher quality gem, the high chance of getting a high enchant. A player may obtain up to 255 additional health per item. Gems come in three qualities: normal, refined, and super. The effect of the gem depends on the quality, with normal being the lowest and super the highest. Usually, the higher the gem's quality, the more expensive it is.

The Punisher

On paper, The Punisher: No Mercy seems like a decent value. For only $10, you get an online multiplayer shooter with eight unique levels, a bunch of characters from the comic books to play as, and enough unlockable weapons and gadgets to keep you occupied for quite a few hours. But when you discover how shallow and generic this first-person shooter is, any bargain bin thrills you get from shooting up your friends will quickly dissipate. You can blow through the Story mode in less than a half hour; after which, you have only repetitive shootouts to look forward to when you take your guns online. For such a cheap price, No Mercy fills the mindless shooter void in a pinch, but any fun is over before you know it.

The main draw in No Mercy is the online multiplayer mode, but there is a perfunctory campaign thrown in for those who want a little practice shooting up brain-dead bots before they pit their skills against more challenging adversaries in competitive play. The four story levels begin and end with hand-drawn story segments that show Frank Castle's confused reaction to fighting clones of his arch nemeses, but they abruptly end with a nasty "To be continued" tease before this seeing-double tale is resolved. The Story mode should provide either a conclusion to the narrative or train you for your online matches, but it does neither. Your bot opponents are devoid of tactical abilities and health, so your time spent shooting up your foes in single-player does a lousy job of preparing you for human-controlled enemies. By the time the story ends, you unlock every playable character, along with a few powerful gadgets and weapons, and a skirmish mode to extend solo sessions, but it's a pretty mundane experience.

Online play is broken up into cooperative and competitive modes, but given the fact that artificial enemies are unnaturally moronic, you have to opt for competitive action if you want opponents who put up a fight. There are a number of different modes to choose from, but all of them offer only slight variations on the classic deathmatch formula. The lack of diverse objectives leads to a monotonous feeling that even the well-designed levels can't overcome. The stages have plenty of hidden passageways and deadly sniper spots, but the intelligent layouts are largely wasted because there isn't a reason to carefully sneak around to seek out the best positions. Each fight is over in the blink of an eye. If you can shoot enemies in the back, they'll most likely die before they can even turn around, which makes for an abrupt and unsatisfying experience.

Because fights are usually over before you can think up a clever trash-talking line, matches are slightly more fun with fewer players. Most maps can accommodate up to eight people but the action is at its best when that number is cut in half. With a few seconds to breathe between encounters, you have a chance to reload your gun and pick up some much-needed health packs, giving you a chance to stay alive for a little while before finally succumbing to an onslaught of bullets. But even when you find the perfect balance of competitors, playing online still has a lot of problems. The matches often lag so much that the only option is to ditch the unreliable automatic weapons, fill the screen with fiery blasts from the rocket launcher, and hope for the best. Worse, still, are the frequent drops. When the host is kicked out, everyone gets booted to the title screen, and this happens so often that it's difficult to get into a shooting rhythm.

The upgrade system is the most interesting aspect of No Mercy, but it messes with the already tenuous balance. By earning kills and picking up power-ups spread across the maps, you can level up your guns, which makes them more accurate and powerful. These upgrades disappear each time you die, but there are permanent rewards you can earn by playing longer. If you chalk up a few hundred kills online, you unlock even more powerful weapons, as well as mods that give your character special abilities. You can only equip two mods at a time (one active and one passive), but they have a significant effect on the action. You can unlock a motion sensor, health regeneration, and even the ability to become invisible. Having upgrades to strive for is a cool idea, but the requirement to unlock the better tools is way too high, forcing players to log in hours upon hours to see the high-end offerings.

Despite a few good features, it's not worth dealing with No Mercy's unsatisfying gunplay, connection issues, and dearth of multiplayer options just to get your hands on a few unlockable items. The grating voice acting doesn't help matters either, with a near-constant stream of vulgar one-liners peppering every match. You'll hear "May the *expletive* rats eat your meat" so many times that the words will lose all meaning. There are a few hours of middling entertainment to extract from this comic-themed package, but other than the bargain price, there is little reason to play The Punisher: No Mercy over any other shooter on the PlayStation 3.

Battlefield 1943

Since its inception in 2002, the Battlefield series has undergone a number of fairly dramatic evolutions. It has made wide jumps from historical to futuristic settings, while adding a heavy emphasis on storytelling to a franchise that once boasted AI-controlled bots as its sole single-player offering. The next entry in the series is Battlefield 1943, a game that will circle back to those early roots as you return to World War II in a fight between US Marines and Imperial Japanese. The action is classic Battlefield through and through, but a number of departures from previous games make for a fresh take on that familiar formula. With the game's release right around the corner, we played several online matches on all the maps to see everything there was left to see in this upcoming first-person shooter.

Battlefield 1943 feels like a hybrid of the original Battlefield 1942 and the series' most recent entry, Bad Company. The retro feeling comes from the setting and overall style of gameplay: you go at it by land, air, and sea with WWII-era weapons and vehicles on a number of famous islands from that war's Pacific theater. However, 1943 will first be released on consoles in the form of a $15 downloadable title available on both Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. With that console focus, it shares an important trait with Bad Company, the first game in the series developed exclusively for consoles. But they also share the Frostbite game engine, so all the destruction (collapsing buildings, trees, and so on) that Bad Company was known for will also be present in 1943.

1943's $15 price tag will get you a pretty robust overall package, with matches that offer support for up to 24 players. The game comes with four island-themed maps--three that offer the traditional Conquest gameplay mode and one that does something altogether different. The three standard maps are Wake Island, Iwo Jima, and Guadalcanal. Wake Island is the most straightforward of the bunch, with relatively flat terrain and short distances between each of the five flags that teams fight over. On the other side of the spectrum is Guadalcanal, which feels much more expansive. The main island in Guadalcanal is filled with winding roads, steep hills, and some dense wilderness areas, making it a very sniper-friendly map that requires careful movement and a heavy dependence on vehicles.

The fourth map is something of an added treat that a lone DICE developer managed to create on his own time. The team liked it so much that they wound up keeping it in the game as an unlockable bonus. It's called Coral Sea and it's strictly for dogfighting in airplanes. There are enough fighter planes for all 24 players--as opposed to the small handful on the standard maps--and the challenge is to chase other players in the sky and shoot them down with your machine guns. It's a huge map with a bunch of exotic islands that offer the opportunity to fly through rock rings like a stunt pilot (and it definitely makes you scratch your head that DICE managed to make such a nice-looking game that only clocks in at a 560-meg download). Coral Sea will be locked until the total number of kills on either platform reaches 43 million, at which point the map becomes unlocked for everyone to play.

You are given a choice of three classes, each with its own primary, alternate, and melee weapons. There's the rifleman, who comes equipped with a rifle, a grenade launcher attachment, and a bayonet; the infantry soldier, who has a submachine gun, a bazooka, and a wrench; and the scout, who uses a sniper rifle, a pistol, and a sword. The latter class also forgoes grenades in favor of remote charges, which come in handy against tanks or as makeshift roadside bombs on the enemy's favorite jeep routes.

The maps are expansive, but you generally won't be wandering around looking for stuff to do because there's always a turret gun, vehicle, or sniper hideout nearby. Options for violent mayhem include .50-cal machine guns, antiaircraft guns, air-raid stations that let you call in and control an airstrike, and just hitching a ride on a jeep and getting on the turret. The only time we did much wandering was when we played as a sniper and went exploring the thick foliage in search of the best hiding spot.

We had a great time with Battlefield 1943. The overall package seems like a rock-solid value at $15. The game should be released very shortly, though no official date has been given by EA. Similarly up in the air is the PC version, which is slated to arrive in September but has yet to be given a price. Stay tuned for more on that front.
